Celtic Cross Design

Across Ireland standing on holy ground are many simple ancient stone crosses. For many centuries these ringed crosses were used to symbolize faith and hope. Known as Celtic Crosses they stand together with other crosses known as High Crosses.

A true Celtic cross always bears a design incorporating a central ring. This ring has its roots in the days of pagan worship. Long before Christianity adopted this simple design the ancient druids referred to it as the Sun Cross.

The Celtic cross replicated this sun cross. The outer circle spans a central cross. What stands them apart from their ancient predecessors is that while Sun crosses are very simple pieces of Celtic cross art they include many intricate and beautiful artistic symbols.

The insular art movement from about the 16th century produced many complex and mysterious designs which today are considered amongst the finest examples of Celtic crosses. The name Insular Art was termed in those days due to the fact that it was impossible to ascertain where this art originated from. This movement began after the Romans left Celtic lands and grew stronger as more and more Celts embraced Christianity. What is certain though is that these crosses are endemic to Ireland.
