High crosses
High crosses survive today in Britain, Scotland and Ireland yet were also taken to Europe by Irish monks. Most have the distinctive ring shown in the Celtic cross although many high crosses don't. High crosses are substantially larger than Celtic crosses and feature more figural decoration. There are high crosses found that bear inscriptions but these are thought to be Anglo Saxon.

The ring featured on high crosses is highly decorative. Those dating back to around the 8th century bear only geometric design but from then until the 12th century biblical scenes were introduced. No high crosses were constructed after the 12th century.
