The Serpent Symbol By Elyah Israel The Serpent is a very controversial subject in religion. We will explore the positive aspects of this ancient symbol. From antiquity the Serpent has been a symbol for Wisdom (Genesis 3:1 and Matthew 10:16). This symbolism is conveyed in Aaron's rod which represents Divine Wisdom. The Hebrew letter Lamed (which means "rod") is also a symbol for Wisdom, Knowledge, and Learning, etcetera. All these connotations are synthesized in the account of Aaron's rod being transformed into a serpent (Exodus 4:3). The Hebrew letter Teth means "a serpent" and its numerical value is nine (9). 9 is an interesting number in that regardless of how many times you multiply or add it, the answer is 9! For example: 9x3=27. 2+7=9. 9x9=81. 8+1=9. 9x11=99. 9+9=18. 1+8=9. This cannot be done with any other number. If we add the nine single digit whole numbers, 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9, we get 45. Reducing 45 to a single digit by adding 4 and 5, we get 9! Another interesting characteristic of 9 is that it even curls in on itself, much like the serpent. I should say, rather, it is the serpent that curls like the 9, as it was Pythagoras who said, "Id om," which is, "Things imitate numbers." The number 9 reminds me of the ouroboros, which is the ancient symbol of a serpent eating its own tail. The ouroboros symbolizes the perpetual and unending cycle of LIFE: Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. The wind blows to the south, and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. (Ecclesiastes 1: 4-7) The ouroboros also symbolizes life's new beginning which is embedded in its ending, and of its ending which is embedded in its beginning. The Scriptures liken Christ to the bronze serpent Moses raised to heal the Israelites when they had been afflicted by fiery serpents in the wilderness (Numbers 21: 8 and 9; John 3:14). The word for serpent used in the Holy Bible is nahash. Nahash has the same gematria as Messiah, which is 358. Esoterically, the Serpent is a reference to Kundalini. Succinctly, the Kundalini is the process of transmuting the sexual forces into Spiritual forces to achieve Cosmic Awareness.
