CANDY CANE. A certain craftsman made white sticks of candy in the shape of a shepherd's crooks in the 17th century at the proposal of a Choirmaster in Germany. The said treats were distributed to children to keep them quiet during special Christmas ceremonies at the nativity scene. Without any doubt, the word began to spread rapidly and it didn't take a long time for the new custom to be created. In the 1950's, Gregory Keller, an American Catholic Priest, invented a machine to manufacture the candy at a faster rate, thus increasing its popularity even more all throughout the world. They are colored white and laced with red stripes. Red symbolizes new life and white is for the purity of Christ. Later, green was added into the candies as a symbol of everlasting life, while the three strips stands for the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS. The story that follows is perhaps the most famous stocking legend. It revives the good qualities of giving without the expectations of getting something in return, for which St. Nicholas was legendary! There was a nobleman whose wife met an untimely death. He spent away all his fortune leaving his three unmarried daughters face the cruel wrath of poverty. One night, the daughters washed and hang their stockings to dry near the chimney. Saint Nicholas, touched by the misfortune of the three girls, came that night and placed a pouch of gold in each of their stockings. The next morning, the family was surprised to see that their stockings had been filled with gold! At last the nobleman could now marry off all his daughters. And that's how the practice of hanging stockings came into existence.

As you can observe, Christmas symbols have wonderful origins and fun legends that are definitely worthy of our time and extra effort. Introduce these meanings into your conversations with families and friends and enjoy the deeper meaning of all the decors you see floating in Christmas air. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
