What I find most interesting in Holtom's story of how our current peace symbol came to be--is that the semaphore symbols fit the exact same downward symbol of despair which he admits was the inspiration for the drawing. Holtom contradicts himself, however when he makes reference to Goya's "peasant before the firing squad" in his letter to Brock. The famous painting depicting this scene is Goya's The Third of May, 1808 and in it the peasant clearly has his hands raised in an upright V position. I believe that Holtom did indeed regret the downward peace symbol and for good reason.
